What Everyone Can Do to Help Minimize the Global Energy Shortage

The energy crisis has afflicted not just the United States but the world. This is evident in the rising cost of gasoline, which is only a fragment of the problem. The resources of the earth which cannot be renewed or replaced are being consumed at a frightening rate. These resources include natural gas, coal and uranium. Many people want to help, but aren't sure how one person can make a difference. Read on to find out how:

Read Your News On the Internet

Rather than subscribing to your favorite newspaper, read your news online at one of the many local and/or national news providers. If you have a newspaper subscription, cancel. The less people who buy and subscribe to newspapers and get their information online, the more trees are spared.

Change the Way You Travel

Every single day millions of people drive their vehicle around to get where they need to go. Each vehicle emits polluting carbon dioxide while gobbling up large amounts of non-renewable fuel. Luckily there are better alternatives, such as walking, public transportation and even carpooling. Even if you don't give up your automobile completely simply using it less can help.

Cut Down on Air Conditioning Use

Don't use air conditioning in your vehicle unless it is completely necessary. When traveling under 40 miles per hour you actually use less gas if you are traveling with the windows down. When traveling at higher speeds the air conditioner uses less power. Please note you should not stop using air conditioning in extreme heat, use your best judgment regarding this issue.

Don't Drive When Stressed

Did you know that driving when angry or upset can lead to lead-foot syndrome and burn up to 50 percent more gas than you would burn if you were driving in a relaxed and calm state. Watch the pressure of your foot on the accelerator and try destressing while driving with music you enjoy. When panic or anger strikes deep breathing and positive self-talk can help a great deal.

Always Recycle

This is one of the oldest Earth-friendly tips around. Recycle everything you possibly can. Use cloth bags if possible when shopping because they can be reused many times. Avoid plastic bags when possible and when you do use them, reuse them for other purposes. Also make sure you recycle all your paper and aluminum.

Plant a Tree

By planting a tree or two you can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Even a single tree can absorb and convert an entire ton of carbon dioxide during its life span. Something this small can make this big of a difference over the years.

Refuse to Buy Harmful Products

When shopping, boycott anything that is not made with the environment in mind. Use as many green products as you can. With so many so-called “green” products on store shelves this is an easy step to take.

Educate Future Generations

Of course we all want our kids to have a clean, healthy Earth to enjoy in the future. Start now by teaching them about the environment and what we all can do to take care of it. There are easy ways children can conserve energy around the house such as turning off lights and television sets when they're not watching them. Also teach your little ones to limit the water they use when showering and brushing their teeth.
