Where Energy Comes From and Why New Sources are Needed

The use of energy plays a large role in the air level of carbon dioxide. Most of us take electricity for granted and use it daily without a second thought. Take a moment to think about where the power to turn on your lights or run your TV is coming from. The vast majority of our need for energy is fulfilled through coal and fossil fuels. These substances release dangerous carbon dioxide into the air, which scientists fear has a detrimental impact on the planet. Even though a lot of people aren't informed about how their daily use of energy can affect the planet many would like to help in any way they can.

Not only do our main sources of energy cause potential harm to Earth's atmosphere, we should also be concerned with the fact they will run out someday. They are not renewable, which means when they're gone, they're gone. Without an alternative source of energy think about where that would leave the planet and everyone on it. While there are some who live off the land and do not rely on energy sources the vast majority of Earth's residents do rely on energy.

There are companies who are considering alternative sources of energy such as solar and wind. While these forms of energy production are used all over the world, some of these big companies are looking at taking things to a higher level, a bigger scale. The need for alternative renewable energy can differ from place to place. For example an area with bodies of water on which dams can be built make great sources of water power. Consistently windy areas are ideal for wind powered generators while consistently sunny areas are ideal for solar power. There is no one-size-fits-all solution when approaching the energy crisis.

Researchers around the world are working hard to come up with sources of alternative energy. Nuclear power is definitely the most controversial when it comes to solving the energy crisis. Some believe it is a good alternative source of energy, others feel the risks outweigh the benefits. For example, many are afraid of nuclear plant disasters. Others point to the fact that nuclear waste cannot be disposed of, only stored and there is but only so much storage space. Therefore one cannot say nuclear power is the answer, right now there are many possible solutions to consider.

While scientists and experts strive to come up with an end to this crisis, we can all do our part by reducing energy use. This means taking small steps like turning off the light if you are leaving the room. Unplug your cell phone charger when it is not in use. Use compact fluorescent light bulbs as opposed to the traditional kind and walk rather than drive if possible.
