The Positive Impact of Flicking Off a Light Switch
The growing concern about our environment is for good reason. The scientific and geological experts have expressed their opinions and fears regarding the state of our planet. As a result, people are finally starting to take notice and making an attempt to live green. However many feel it is difficult or impossible to make any kind of difference in the situation because it is so gigantic. The key is for many people to take small steps.
You've probably heard the saying "think global, act local." You can apply this not just as a motto, but as a way of life. When large numbers of people begin to do the same thing, positive results happen. The good news is that the small steps necessary to make a real difference in the health of our planet are things which are part of our daily lives already. One of the most simple and commonly performed tasks is turning off a light switch.
While there are some who would argue flipping off a switch when exiting the room is not going to save the world, it very well could. Imagine if every person turned off every light in every room they weren't using? That could make a gigantic difference. Suppose every home turned off their lights including yours, this would mean less energy used and more money saved.
No one is suggesting you ban the use of lighting and walk around in the dark. The main idea is for lights in rooms not in use to be turned off, not just at home but also at work. If everyone can pitch in to make sure they are practicing this most simple of energy conservation steps, we really can make positive change happen. While it may not feel like you are making a big difference every time you flick off your light switch, imagine millions of others following suit.
There are plenty of other ways to be a better, greener person every day. When you are able, walk or bike to your destinations rather than taking a vehicle or using public transportation. The more people that do this, the less carbon monoxide pollution in the air. Also, switch your traditional light bulbs to compact fluorescent light bulbs, which last for years and use less energy. Small steps like these can equal big changes.
